Parvovirus is a very tough virus that infects dogs and causes life threatening vomiting and diarrhea.  This is especially severe in puppies, where the disease may overwhelm little pups quickly.parvovirus_in_Kihei__Hawaii.jpg

Hawaii has a lot of "parvo".  The main signs are vomiting, diarrhea, sometimes with blood, loss of appetite, and loss of energy.  One of the scary things about this virus is that it is able to live for many years, in some cases up to 7, invisibly in the environment.

This means that if you have a dog or pup that is not vaccinated completely, your pet may be succeptible to parvo infection.

Puppies in Kihei and elsewhere must have finished their puppy series before they are protected.  The last vaccination is given at 16 weeks of age in most cases.  Keep your puppy quarantined at home during this period and minimize exposure to other dogs.
