Do pets get sunburn?

Here on Maui we have a lot of sun, especially on the South Shore in Kihei.
This is one of the most common questions we are asked, especially if someone is new to the island.

There are some conditions that get worse in sun, but the pet needs to have a predisposition already.  Some dogs can get a "sunburn" in the bridge of the nose.  The scientific name is "solar dermatitis".  Some cats are sensitive to the UV rays of sunshine too, on the ears and the nose.

There are a few more serious issues that can be related to sun (see below).

What pets are more sensitive to sun?  Like people, it is usually light colored pets with light skin.

AAHA does indeed recommend that these pets be protected with sunscreen. Apply to ears, top of nose, edges of ears, and areas where there is not much hair or fur.

Active ingredients in sunscreen are  Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Octyl Salicylate, Homosalate and  Benzophenone-3.  Octyl Salicylate products should not be used on cats.

Reapply sunscreen every 4-6 hours.  Do not let your pet lick sunscreen.  You may apply it before meals, walks, or playing to distract your pet.

There are some cancers that can be brought on by sunlight too. If you see redness, crusting of the nose or on the ears, hair loss on the bridge of the nose, or lumps on the skin, please contact us promptly so we can make sure your Maui pet stays happy and healthy!
